In Loving Memory of Barbara Malett Weitz, Esq.

It is with great sadness that I write to tell you that our good friend, Barbara Weitz, passed away on December 6, 2013. Barbara’s passing is a huge loss for her family, her friends, Mission Kids and the Montgomery County and Philadelphia communities.

In 2008, I went out to dinner with Barbara and told her of the new project that I was involved with to develop a Child Advocacy Center in Montgomery County. Barbara called me the following morning to tell me that she had been thinking about what I said all night and that she wanted to find a way to volunteer and become involved. Barbara’s unique professional background and passions made her an ideal addition to Mission Kids. After attending Temple University, her initial graduate work focused on social work, but decided that her skills would enable her to make a larger impact by studying law. She graduated Antioch Law school, and her legal career included being a prosecutor, public defender, medical malpractice defender and representing patients who needed an attorney in the mental health court system in Philadelphia.

Barbara’s strong professional background was always combined with strong ethics and a need to do what was ‘right’ for vulnerable individuals who needed help. She did anything and everything for Mission Kids including stuffing envelopes and purchasing office supplies. She became the volunteer Director of the Volunteers at Mission Kids, a certified trainer in Darkness to Light and Mandatory Reporting Training and joined the Board of Trustees in 2009 where she contributed her intellect, insight and experience.

Continuing Barbara’s endless dedication to Mission Kids, her husband, Howard, and children, Benjamin, Aaron and Hannah, have requested that donations be made in memory of Barbara to Mission Kids. In her memory, Mission Kids has started the Barbara Malett Weitz Memorial Fund. We hope to fulfill Barbara’s ultimate goal to help children heal from the trauma of child abuse.
Barbara was indeed a wonderful, warm, caring person. She will be sorely missed.
